Maybe cause it starts the party with a slamming beat that an early hit like "I Want You Back" only hinted theyd someday command. If itd been arranged chronologically, this collection might have documented the transition theyand teen pop in generalmade from vanilla harmonies to R&B pretensions. Instead, the boys flip callow and cool like theyre two sides of the same coin, whether fawning cutely on "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time" or aching acutely on "Gone," while "Pop" celebrated Todays Sound as defiantly (if less prophetically) as "It Will Stand" or "School Days" had in the 50s. So live your life, Justinand J.C., were pulling for you too.
